What is Glued Laminated Timber, referred as [GLT]?

Glued Laminated Timber (GLT) is a product engineered from durable wood laminations glued together, using moisture-resistant non-toxic adhesives. Individual timber pieces called “lamellas” are layered and glued one upon another in a parallel direction.

Proven to withstand the test of time GLT is strong, durable, non-corrosive and lightweight, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, thus making this versatile product a popular choice for renowned architects and builders worldwide.

Discover the unmatched strength of GLT!

Applications include;

  • Large span structures Pool halls, bridges and hangers
  • Post and beam structures – Office buildings, schools and pavilions

Additional GLT facts;

  • Sustainably sourced timber
  • Naturally fire insulating properties
  • GLT is dimensionally stable, holding it’s shape and resisting warping, bending and twisting
  • Sound absorptive material – improves unwelcome noise / sounds
  • High-strength structural qualities. Some applications can be substituted for steel and concrete
  • Shorter install times in comparison to traditional building systems
  • Smaller carbon footprint than steel and concrete
  • Lightweight in comparison to alternatives such as steel and concrete

What is Cross Laminated Timber, referred as [CLT]?

CLT, Cross Laminated Timber, is when pieces of timber are glued together systematically. The lamellas and are glued together with the timber grain alternating at 90-degree angles for every layer, thus increasing its strength properties.

Due to CLT’s high-rating strength properties, visual aesthetics,  clean and speedy installation process and the reduction of onsite construction build times and mounting costs associated to lengthier builds, this product is becoming a popular choice in the multi-story construction industry.

CLT is well-suited to medium and larger multi-storey builds.

Applications include;

  • Hybrid systems – Modular and panelised modular builds for Interior floor, walls and ceilings

Additional CLT facts;

  • Sustainably sourced timber
  • Naturally fire insulating properties
  • CLT is dimensionally stable, holding it’s shape and resisting warping, bending and twisting
  • Sound absorptive material – improves unwelcome noise / sounds
  • Its paneling characteristic has the ability to withstand compressive forces
  • Light and strong with similar strength characteristics to concrete, with the addition of rating well in seismic events
  • CLT panels allow for shorter installation times, thus completing onsite projects on a much shorter timeframe
  • Smaller carbon footprint than steel and concrete

Completed Project [Mass Timber]

MASS TIMBER TASMANIA, AUSTRALIAUniversity of Tasmania - Forestry Building

Savcon played an integral part throughout the design phase assisting design consultants with buildability. Savcon undertook the timber installation package consisting of 418m 3 intricate timber “saw-tooth” roof with splice connections made from Masslam GLT by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods ASH (Heyfield, Victoria).

The project aims to revitalise, adapt and activate the Forestry Building precinct, to provide a new CBD location across 14,000sqm for the College – with sustainability at the forefront.

Savcon were engaged to assist with design, procurement and to erect Tasmania’s first timber high-rise building. The project used a mix of local and international manufacturers featuring 370m 3 of Spruce GLT from HESS (Germany), 938m 3 CLT from XLAM (Albury Wodonga, Victoria) and 109m 3 hardwood CLT from CUSP (Wynyard, Tasmania).

The “speed of construction” was one of the builders’ biggest highlights, thanks in majority to the Savcon Mass Timber team.
