What is Glued Laminated Timber, referred as [GLT]?
Glued Laminated Timber (GLT) is a product engineered from durable wood laminations glued together, using moisture-resistant non-toxic adhesives. Individual timber pieces called “lamellas” are layered and glued one upon another in a parallel direction.
Proven to withstand the test of time GLT is strong, durable, non-corrosive and lightweight, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, thus making this versatile product a popular choice for renowned architects and builders worldwide.

What is Cross Laminated Timber, referred as [CLT]?
CLT, Cross Laminated Timber, is when pieces of timber are glued together systematically. The lamellas and are glued together with the timber grain alternating at 90-degree angles for every layer, thus increasing its strength properties.
Due to CLT’s high-rating strength properties, visual aesthetics, clean and speedy installation process and the reduction of onsite construction build times and mounting costs associated to lengthier builds, this product is becoming a popular choice in the multi-story construction industry.
CLT is well-suited to medium and larger multi-storey builds.

- Hybrid systems – Modular and panelised modular builds for Interior floor, walls and ceilings

MASS TIMBER SYDNEY, AUSTRALIAAMRF – First Building
Savcon were engaged to Design and Construct Bringelly’s first Research Manufacturing facility spanning 2,800sqm GFA. Our inhouse design team created the initial schematic design and worked with the Builder & Consultants to ensure their vision was represented.
Using LOD 400 modelling we partnered with our national and international suppliers early in the process to ensure clear communication from the get-go. Savcon was then responsible for all international freight and local deliveries of the timber and associated fixings and bracketry to site as well as the installation/construction covering 500m 3 of Masslam GLT from Australian Sustainable Hardwoods ASH (Heyfield, Victoria) and 498m 3 Spruce CLT & GLT from Stora Enso (Austria).

MASS TIMBER SYDNEY, AUSTRALIALight Horse Business Hub
Savcon designed and constructed over 700m 3 of timber across the three office buildings to help the industrial sector meet their carbon off set targets.
Bordering Australia’s largest interchange located at the intersection of Westlink M7 and M4 Western Motorway, the Light Horse Business Hub is the largest remaining parcel of industrial land east of the M7.
The three-office buildings comprised of 467m 3 of CLT from XLAM (Albury Wodonga, Victoria) & NeXTimber (Tarpeena, South Australia) and 234m 3 of Masslam GLT from Australian Sustainable Hardwoods ASH (Heyfield, Victoria).

MASS TIMBER SYDNEY, AUSTRALIAMacquarie University - Clinical Education Building
This project, built by Savcon, was headed by Buildcorp Group bringing to life Macquarie University’s vision for longevity and biophilia for all current & future students, lecturers & visitors alike.
Built in 2019, visiting this imposing building today, still gives us the sense of welcoming strength, warmth, safety, beauty & character, all with minimising carbon footprint. It is no surprise that the Ainsworth Building won the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW) Awards, Educational Architecture Award, in 2021 and Australian Timber Design Awards, People’s Choice Award, in 2020 and shortlisted for 2021 Sustainability Award in the Education and Research Category.
Construction that is environmentally friendly, strong & everlasting can best be achieved when using timber as the core material.

MASS TIMBER SYDNEY, AUSTRALIABay Pavilions Arts + Aquatic Leisure Centre
An iconic new gateway for the region, Bay Pavilions, the Batemans Bay Regional Aquatic & Arts Leisure Centre, has become a drawcard for sports, tourism and regional arts programs for the Eurobodalla Shire.
A highlight of the building is the innovative use of timber through the entry foyers and over the aquatic areas. Savcon were appointed to install the long spanning hybrid timber ‘bow-string’ truss spanning the main pool hall which is a defining feature of the building, requiring a detailed dual lift (2 crane) lifting strategy to help support the trusses during the aerial manoeuvre.
Our team worked on the design and lifting strategy for the primary bow-string trusses, which were up to 33m long and weighed up to 7tonne. Savcon fabricated and installed the GLT pool hall main rafters, consisting of 0.900×0.365x33m GLT with steel bow tie tension truss. Bay Pavilions Arts + Aquatic Leisure Centre

MASS TIMBER SYDNEY, AUSTRALIAEric Tweedale Granville Stadium
Glulam timber structure was the integral aspect of the design.The glulam timber roof cantilevers, over eight meters, provide shelter from the weather and solar shade cover for the seating. The use of a mass timber structure in the Stadium is the first use of glulam timber for this type of facility in Australia, representing an impressive achievement in timber engineering. The concept ‘V’ shaped cantilevered roof beams were inspired by modest aboriginal architecture and local environment.
Sustainable design was an important objective of the project, and the timber construction was key to achieving this – low carbon, low waste and highly energy efficient.
